The LT series operates on the photoelectric principle. When scanning the chrome-structured glass scale a sensor array is scanning several tracks which contain high resolution measurement information, the electronic  produce a specified tolerance of ± 0.1 µm.

The maximum speed of travel for the LT sensor is about 2 meters per second due to synchronization requirements with incremental type sensors. In contrast, the speed of the absolute system of encoding is limited only by mechanical considerations.
